The Best Dog Training Equipment: Humane & Effective Choices

dog training equipment

As a Fear Free Certified Positive Reinforcement Dog Trainer, I prioritize tools that promote comfort, safety, and effective communication. The right training equipment can make all the difference in helping your dog learn while ensuring their well-being. Here’s a breakdown of my top recommended training tools and why they work.

1. Leashes: Teaching Without Discomfort

A good leash provides safety and guidance while allowing freedom of movement.

Standard 6-foot Leash – Ideal for everyday walks and training. A leash made of sturdy nylon or biothane is comfortable to hold and durable.

Long Line (10-30 feet) – Perfect for recall training and allowing your dog to explore safely in open spaces. Look for lightweight options to avoid dragging.

Hands-Free Leash – Great for jogging or training sessions where you need both hands available for rewards and cues.

Multifunctional Double-Ended Dog Leash – This leash has 2 trigger clips which allow for 2 points of connection and other versatile uses.

⚠️ Avoid retractable leashes, as they can encourage pulling and cause injuries due to sudden tension.

2. Harnesses: Distributing Pressure Safely

Harnesses provide a safe and humane way to guide your dog without putting pressure on the neck.

Front-Clip Harness (e.g., Balance Harness, Blue-9, PetSafe 3-in-1, or Ruffwear Front Range) – Helps discourage pulling while allowing full range of motion. I generally do not recommend using front-clip harnesses, though, as they cause gait restriction and discomfort.

Y-Shape Back-Clip Harness – Great for dogs who don’t pull but need secure, comfortable equipment for walks. You want to look for a harness that looks like a “Y” when you look at your dog’s chest, as other designs (such as a horizontal strap across their chest) can restrict shoulder movement and cause problems with their gate. This style of harness is what I generally recommend to most people.

Front- and Back-Clip Harness – Great for dogs who don’t pull but need secure, comfortable walking equipment. This option allows you the choice of clipping the leash to the front clip, the back clip, or both!

Escape-Proof Harness – Essential for dogs prone to slipping out of standard harnesses (e.g., Ruffwear Flagline or Web Master).

Here is an excellent video showing different types of harnesses and how they each affect the way a dog can comfortably move and walk:

⚠️ Avoid aversive harnesses with tightening straps, as they can cause discomfort and negatively impact training.

3. Collars: Identification, Not Control

Collars should be used primarily for ID tags rather than leash attachment, especially for dogs prone to pulling.

Flat Collar – A simple, well-fitted collar for everyday wear.

Breakaway Collar – A safe option for dogs who wear collars at home to prevent accidents.

⚠️ Avoid prong, choke, and shock collars, as they cause pain and stress, harming your dog’s behavior and trust.

4. Clickers & Treat Pouches: Reinforcing Good Behavior

Clicker – A precise way to mark desired behaviors, making training clearer and faster.

Treat Pouch – A must-have for positive reinforcement! Look for pouches with multiple compartments for treats, poop bags, and a clicker.

5. Enrichment & Training Aids

Snuffle Mats & Puzzle Toys – Encourage problem-solving and mental stimulation.

LickiMats & Stuffable Toys (e.g., Kongs) – Great for keeping dogs engaged and helping with relaxation.

Target Stick – A helpful tool for teaching positioning, movement, and focus exercises.

Final Thoughts

The right training equipment sets your dog up for success while keeping the experience positive and stress-free. By choosing humane, well-designed tools, you’ll strengthen the bond and encourage a happy, well-behaved dog.
